One of two men charged after the shooting of two police officers and a police dog in Christchurch yesterday has been remanded on six charges including attempted murder.
The two officers remain in hospital today while the police dog was killed in the incident in Buccleugh Street, Phillipstown.
Christopher Graeme Smith, 34, is charged with attempting to murder Senior Constable Bruce Lamb, who was shot in the jaw, and Constable Mitchel Alatalo who was shot in the thigh.
He is also charged with intentionally killing police dog Gage without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, using a firearm against a third police officer, possession of a pig knife with intent to commit an offence, and cultivating cannabis.
Steven Paul Smith, 31, is charged with possession of cannabis. He did not appear in court and is on bail on a registrar's remand.
Both men are due back in court on July 28.
Police dog handler Lamb, 50, is in Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit after surgery last night to insert titanium plates in his face and jaw after he was shot.
He's in the intensive care unit but was able to speak briefly on the telephone with Superintendent Dave Cliff, Canterbury District Commander, this morning.
"Bruce is in a lot of pain, but he's talking and seems very chipper for what he's been through," he said.
Alatalo, 30, is recovering from surgery for a bullet wound to his left thigh. He is in a surgical ward and is "doing fine" this morning, police said.
